An Unnatural Choice, Author - Mary Hodder Ross, book, Canadian Author, celebrating women, Debbie Ehrstien, Good reads, The Dissociate: A memoir of secrets and survival of childhood sexual abuse

I met Mary Hodder Ross at a book signing in downtown Vancouver (Granville). Mary is a Canadian Author and has recently released her new book.
                                             An Unnatural Choice
“My story, like yours, is about keeping secrets and what that has done to me. It is also about regaining my freedom to be honest and open about who I am. So many women, I have discovered, suffer in silence feeling vulnerable and reluctant to share their truth. Social influences define how we choose and what we become. I hope to be a light for other women. It feels like the exact right moment to be sharing our stories, doesn’t it? We can truly be a part of the change for women and men in creating a healthier and more balanced world.” Mary Hodder Ross

Healing from Writing and Strength from Helping ~ Debbie Ehrstien

In Chapter Six of my book, The Dissociate: A Memoir of Secrets and Survival of Childhood Sexual Abuse I talk about the healing continuum and all the ups and down you experience through the healing process.

Stage Three, I talk about having a voice and breaking the silence. “It takes a great deal of courage to share what happened to you. The powerful healing force behind telling another human being will help you move forward.”

I’m grateful to receive hundreds of notes and emails from survivors and supporters. One in particular, was an email from a fellow warrior. I met this brave woman at one of my public book signing events.

“Because of you, I sought out Rachel Grant and am halfway through her Beyond Surviving group program. She has been such a blessing in my healing journey- this kind of program was exactly what I needed. I had talked to 3 different therapists and had a psychologist but wasn’t getting what I needed or felt like it was helping. Now, with the help of Rachel’s program, I am letting go of the shame behind my childhood abuse and wasn’t even aware of my abandonment issues until I read that chapter!

So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for your courage to write your book. I owe a big part of my healing journey to you.” ~ Leanne

Did you know:

The economic burden of mental illness in Canada is estimated at $51 billion per year. This includes health care costs, lost productivity, and reductions in health-related quality of life.

By the time Canadians reach 40 years of age, 1 in 2 have—or have had—a mental illness

Mental illness is a leading cause of disability in Canada

The disease burden of mental illness is 1.5 times higher than all cancers put together

About 4,000 Canadians per year die by suicide—an average of almost 11 suicides a day

The Dissociate ~ A Memoir of Secrets and Survival of Childhood Sexual Abuse I discuss in Chapter Four my mental illness journey. I share the types of treatment, therapies and doctors that were involved in my road to wellness. I also share an excerpt from a suicide note I wrote on a very dark and painful day I was preparing to take my life. I’m so glad I’m not another statistic and I’m here today to be an advocate for other survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

Please remember, you are not alone.

Over the past year I received countless messages from men & women (survivors and supporters) from all over the world. I made it a goal to respond to each of you.  Thank-you for all the messages and keep up the difficult work of healing. You can do it!

Recently, I received yet another note that touched my heart.

“Debbie Ehrstien’s authentic and unabashed honesty when talking about a topic very close to my heart was inspiring and loving company for me through a period of struggling and healing, and continues to be to this day. Her connection to dance and movement discussed in the book struck me in particular, and I am endlessly thankful that she was brave enough to share her story!”  ~ anonymous

Break the silence and start your healing journey today. You’ll soon realize how strong, courageous and spectacular you really are.

You are not alone.
