Yoga consists of breath (pranayama), postures (asanas) and meditation.

Yoga has been a big part of my continued healing journey. My determination to reconnect my mind and body.

In chapter seven of my book, The Dissociate: A Memoir of Secrets and Survival of Childhood Sexual Abuse I talk about how self-care has helped bring me back into my body.

Yoga Class today was a reminder of my continued work in healing my mind, body and spirit.

I was asked to reach behind and grab my right foot with my right hand. Sounds simple right? I was unable to do this posture. Not because of flexibility but because I didn’t know where my foot was. I began to feel panic. Stress began to surge through my body. I looked behind to ensure I still had a right foot. I know that sounds odd but I had to reassure my mind I was still whole. I then began judging myself. Why is this happening again? Why am I disconnecting my mind and body?

It only lasted a few minutes thanks to some deep cleansing breaths.  I began to quiet my mind and quickly I realized that I’m very much a work in progress and that’s okay.

Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that is the result of great suffering. PTSD can disrupt your whole life ― your job, your relationships, your health and your everyday enjoyment.

But there’s hope.

Do the hard work and don’t give up.

You are not alone.

This week I had the pleasure of spending time with Theo Fleury.

We share a common thread of surviving childhood sexual abuse. Theo is a true inspiration to me. He created Breaking Free Foundation – an organization to help survivors. To provide survivors of traumatic life events with the treatment and support needed to reclaim their lives.

I met several survivors at the signing this past weekend at Indigo CrossIron Mills. Courageous warriors that have big bold voices for the world to hear the truth and some just taking that first step in the healing process. Child abuse of any sort can leave lasting scares. And mental illness is often the result. Mental illness changes the way people feel, think and sometimes act.

The pain and struggle victims endure stay with them for life.
Those imbedded scars NEVER go away. New research is now revealing what happens to the brain in the aftermath of early-life abuse. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/319566.php

The economic impact of child abuse on society is staggering.
According to the Day model, which measures the judicial, social services, education, health, employment and personal costs of violence:
The total costs of child abuse (including child sexual abuse) are estimated to be $15,705,910,947 annually.

Please get educated to END childhood sexual abuse.

Here’s a little sneak peek at one of the chapters in my upcoming Book

My Self Care Diet
All my friends know me as a Foodie. I have a love for cooking and eating. Diet & nutrition and many other lifestyle changes has led to a healthier happier me. I became interested in what I was consuming because at times I felt horrible after eating certain foods. Mentally and physically. After all, we are what we eat right?
I had the pleasure of getting to know a friend who ate like a caveman. But he certainly didn’t look like one. He was the picture of health. His way of eating was called ‘Paleo diet’.
The Paleo way of eating is an effort to eat like we used to way back in the day. Consisting of a clean diet without additives, preservatives, or chemicals. No refined sugars or processed foods. And an abundance of organic vegetables, oils, nuts and seeds. And meat.
I didn’t adopt the paleo culture completely because I choose to eat meat and seafood only occasionally.

In my upcoming book I list the foods that have led to a healthier happier me. 😊
